Why Your Pool Turned Green and How to Fix It

By Imperial Valley Pool Services · Updated 2026-10-23

Green pool water is algae. It usually means chlorine dropped too low, often because of heat, high stabilizer, poor circulation or a skipped week. Clearing it takes testing, brushing, a shock dose, steady filtration and a clean filter, and it can take several days.

In summer a healthy pool can go green in two or three days. Warm water, strong sun and a weak chlorine level are the perfect recipe.

Common causes

  • Chlorine ran out, from heat, bathers or a dust storm.
  • Stabilizer is too high, so the chlorine you have isn't effective.
  • The pump ran too few hours or the filter was clogged.
  • pH drifted high, which weakens chlorine.
  • A week of service was missed.

How it gets cleared

  1. Test everything. You need to know pH, alkalinity, chlorine and CYA first.
  2. Remove debris and empty skimmer and pump baskets.
  3. Brush every surface so algae is lifted into the water.
  4. Bring pH into range so chlorine works, then shock to a high chlorine level (the dose depends on your CYA).
  5. Run the pump continuously and clean the filter as it fills with dead algae.
  6. Retest daily and repeat the shock if the water is still green or chlorine won't hold.

When it won't clear

A pool that stays green after a couple of shocks often has high CYA, a failing filter or a circulation problem. A technician can find which one it is faster than trial and error.

Keeping it from coming back

Keep chlorine in range, keep the filter clean, run the pump long enough in summer, and have the water tested every week. That's the idea behind our weekly service plans. If your pool is already green, request a quote and we'll tell you what it needs.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to swim in a green pool?

No. Green water usually means the sanitizer isn't doing its job, and the algae can hide bacteria. Wait until the water is clear and chlorine is back in range.

How long does it take to clear a green pool?

A mildly green pool can clear in two to three days. A heavy bloom can take a week or more, depending on the filter and how fast chlorine holds.

Will a cover or shade prevent algae?

They help by reducing sun and heat, but they don't replace chlorine and circulation.
